What are Talking Therapies?

Talking therapies provide a safe space to explore and address emotional challenges with the support of a trained professional.

Talking therapies are psychological treatments for emotional problems like stress, anxiety and depression. Some people are unsure about talking to someone about their problems – sometimes due to feeling ashamed or embarrassed. Resistance to opening up about your thoughts and feelings can also be due to beliefs about therapy from your upbringing, your culture or the society you live in, for example that men don’t talk about their problems. Talking about our problems, whoever we are and whatever they may be, can be very helpful.

Talking therapies are a way for you to talk about whatever causes you stress, anxiety, depression or a whole host of negative feelings so that the therapist can help you work out your triggers for these feelings and help you find ways to address these to improve your wellbeing.

There are lots of different types of talking therapy, but they all involve working with a trained therapist. This may be one-to-one, in a group, online or over the phone. The important thing is that the therapist can help you with tools and techniques to manage and cope better with the problems you may be experiencing.  They’re not interested in judging, just in finding different ways of thinking and behaving that work for you.  For some problems, one type of talking therapy may be better than another. Different talking therapies suit different people.  We’re all unique.  Talking therapies very much recognise this – that’s why the most important thing is how you feel about your problems and worries.

It’s important to know that talking therapy is not just “talking about your problems”; it’s also working toward solutions. Some therapy may involve homework, such as tracking your moods, writing about your thoughts, or participating in social activities that have caused you anxiety in the past.

Total Wellbeing can offer people in Luton support for both their emotional and physical health as both are interlinked after all.  Emotional stress can lead to unhealthy behaviours and an unhealthy lifestyle for example and, in reverse, an unhealthy lifestyle can cause emotional stress.

Below a recent client talks about their initial scepticism, on referral to the service by a friend:

“I was recommended by a friend to Total Wellbeing Luton, as I was struggling with my anxiety. I didn’t expect much if I am completely honest. I went into the sessions with a hope that I could speak to someone impartial that could help me with certain situations I was being faced with at the time, which would cause my anxiety to escalate.

Whilst having my sessions I felt a sense of control. I was able to identify my triggers and work on ways to deal with hypothetical and practical worries. My worries never went away, but I was able to focus my mind on what was actually required at the time. I was able to identify the things in life that keep my mind healthy and work on dedicating my time to these.

I would recommend Total Wellbeing’s talking therapies to anyone that feels they need support like I did.”
