Although she had used a gym in her home country, stepping into a gym in the UK felt like a completely new experience. Unsure of what to expect, Josephine admits she was nervous when she first arrived. However, thanks to the warm welcome, encouragement and support from the Active Luton team, those nerves soon began to fade.
Taking the First Step
Today, Josephine is a familiar face at Inspire, making physical activity an important part of her weekly routine. What once felt intimidating has become something she genuinely looks forward to, and with every visit her confidence continues to grow.
By taking part in the Exercise on Referral programme, Josephine has been able to establish healthy habits with the support of experienced staff who understand that everyone's wellbeing journey is unique.
Benefits Beyond Physical Fitness
The impact has gone far beyond improving fitness levels.
Josephine says she feels physically stronger, is walking more and can now climb stairs independently — something she previously found difficult. Alongside these physical improvements, she has also experienced a significant boost in her mental wellbeing, feeling calmer, more positive and far less anxious than when she first joined the programme.
Her experience highlights the strong connection between physical activity and emotional wellbeing, demonstrating how small, consistent changes can have a meaningful impact on everyday life.
Building Confidence for the Future
Reflecting on her journey, Josephine is proud of everything she has achieved in such a short space of time. She remains determined to continue building on her progress and would encourage others, including friends and family, to take that first step and experience the benefits for themselves.
"I was nervous when I started, but everyone was so supportive. Now I look forward to coming to the gym and feel much more confident in myself."
