Abigail's journey to conquering anxiety and rediscovering joy

Abigail's story is a heartfelt journey of resilience, overcoming anxiety, and finding joy through the support of Total Wellbeing Luton's Talking Therapies.

Before I became a mum I had a physical job, I would exercise at the gym for 3 hours a day, and that helped my emotional wellbeing but then I had a change in lifestyle, I had a child in COVID, I couldn’t look after my mental health the way I used to.

What service did you use?

Talking Therapies - Group Therapy

How has Total Wellbeing Luton helped you?

I was referred to Total Wellbeing Luton by my doctor due to mental health issues and not being severe enough for doctors. I went to TWL and was assessed as having medium to severe anxiety and so I started the 12 week course – quite sceptical, didn’t think it was going to work as they worried it was too uniformed, however, after a coupled of weeks, after doing the homework and keeping with it, it worked.

Before I became a mum I had a physical job, I would exercise at the gym for 3 hours a day, and that helped my emotional wellbeing but then I had a change in lifestyle, I had a child in COVID, I couldn’t look after my mental health the way I used to. I developed a rapport with Jo, she made a connection with us, spoke to us, and wasn’t just interested in your problems she was interested in you as a person, she made the group sessions personable. I went from being sceptical about the group sessions to looking forward to them, Jo, and seeing other clients – it was nice to know I wasn’t the only person going through it, we had different issues but similar mindsets. My relationship with my partner and daughter has changed for the better, so has my lifestyle. Before TWL I wouldn’t go out with people I didn’t know, I had panic attacks meeting my partners friends but now I can go out without worrying about whose going to be there or what to wear etc. My emotional wellbeing in week 1 of CBT in comparison to week 11 has changed massively for the better, I have still got a long way to go but Jo helped me to understand why things go the way they do, she asked the right questions at the right time.

What helped you the most?

Having that rapport with Jo and trust with her.

What would you say to others in a similar position?

I have already told my close friends and family about getting CBT, it can be intense to think about CBT but if you learn how to use the tools a therapist can give you, you almost learn how to be your own therapist,  it is a big stepping stone. If you don’t want to divulge into your emotional wellbeing you don’t need to, you can listen and find out how people go through similar things. I will shout it from the rooftops, if you don’t know where to start in regards to bettering your emotional wellbeing you should do this first, I definitely recommend it.

Honestly thank you, I mean it.
